Pros

  • Very fast program that's lightweight and rarely lags
  • Simple interface that allows you to view, print and mode 3D models
  • Scan 3D models to get exact replicas in the program

Cons

  • Despite the name, this program is limited in terms of building 3D models

You'll find that 3D Builder is a program that can make, convert and print 3D images. While the name implies that this program is intended for creating 3D models, most of its tools are geared towards viewing and printing these models instead. This program is very lightweight and easy to use. This makes it good for newcomers or those who are more interested in viewing 3D models.

Primary Features

The 3D Builder program has a number of features for working with 3D models. In general, the main features involve viewing and printing 3D models. This program does a wonderful job of allowing you to view and move 3D models so that you can see every angle of them. This can also connect to regular or 3D printers to print out the model image. Much like with viewing, you can print from various angles.

Building Models

While the name implies that this program is used for building 3D models, the tools dedicated to this task are fairly weak and limited. You can certainly build a 3D model, but the tools only allow you to use rudimentary shapes and there are few tools for editing those shapes or adding textures. You also cannot select specific parts of the 3D model, which is a common tool for other 3D model building programs.

You definitely can make models in this program and it's relatively easy, but those looking for a powerful and robust program might be disappointed.

Converting Flat Images

One unique tool here is the ability to convert flat 2D images into 3D models. While the conversion isn't always perfect, as is common with other similar programs, it actually does a good job of taking all the elements from your image and making it a 3D model. It's best if your image is clear and not too complicated. For example, building a model of a single tree will be much easier than a forest with animals, plants and other elements in the background.

Scan Images

If you have the technology, then you can connect this to a 3D scanner to scan a model into the program. This allows you to rapidly create models rather than doing it from scratch. As long as everything is scanned properly, this should easily generate an exact replica of the model in the program.

Surprisingly Fast

While 3D Builder may not be the most robust program, it's easily one of the fastest. You'll find that models build quickly, there is rarely any lag when working with shapes, you can easily switch from one tool to another without any waiting and so on. It's a lightweight program that works very quickly and might be a great program if you want to make small changes without any lags.
